BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS

2009 – ongoing - Abstract Naturalism:  a series of multi-panel paintings that has been shaped by the artist’s interest in  philosophy, physics, and modernist aesthetics.

2007-ongoing - Sentient Landscapes: a series of  acrylic on panel paintings dealing with connections, cycles, and relationships in the natural world.

2007- Black Hills Stone: a series of 11” X 14” acrylic on paper paintings depicting the unending diversity of rock formations in the Black Hills and creatures that dwell with them.

2006 – 2007 – Issa:108 a series of 108 8” X 8” acrylic on paper paintings based on the haiku of Kobayashi Issa (touring version titled This World of Ours, 60 paintings)

2003 – 2005 – Cloud Messenger:  a series of ninety 8 ½ X 8 ½ inch acrylic paintings inspired by the ancient Sanskrit poetry of Kalidasa.

2001 – 2003 – Gitanjali (Song Offerings):  a series of 103 nine inch by nine inch acrylic paintings inspired by the 1913 Noble Prize winning book of poems “Gitanjali” by Rabindranath Tagore.

2001 - 2000 – Buddhist Animal Wisdom Stories: a series of 37 acrylic paintings on paper based on ancient Buddhist Jataka Tales retold by the artist.

1999 - 1996 -- Elders of the Benedictines: a series of thirty 30" X 30" acrylic portraits of Benedictine brothers and sisters from monasteries across the United States accompanied by printed interviews with the elders conducted by the artist.

1998 - 1992 -- Designs of Faith: a series of twelve five section canvases (quintychs), 6 1/2' X 8' and twelve essays -- each canvas and essay is a study of the moral and ethical foundations of a religion.

1996-1998 People of Wisdom: a series of 17" X 11" collagraphic portraits accompanied by posted quotes. The individuals depicted are  religious and secular people whose wisdom and insights have been important to the artist.  Each print is limited to an edition of fifty copies.

1995 -- Elders of the Faiths: a series of fifteen 2' X 2' acrylic portraits of elders from a wide variety of faiths in the Midwest accompanied by printed interviews conducted by the artist dealing with the values and outlooks of the elders (book version published in 1996 by Ex Machina Publishing, Sioux Falls SD).

1992 -- Paintings from Lakota and Dakota Animal Wisdom Stories: twelve paintings based on animal stories of the Lakota and Dakota people, installation includes posted copies of the stories, all canvases 45" X 45", mixed media on canvas (book version published in 1994 by Tipi Press, Chamberlain, SD)

 

1991 -- The Wonderful World of Explorers: a twelve canvas painting installation and seventy minute performance work contrasting what is taught of the early explorers of the "New World" to research information, all canvases 45" X 45", mixed media on canvas, performance is also available as a seventy-three minute video lecture.

1987-1990 -- Two Ways: installation and performance consisting of seven painted pillar sculptures, forty portraits, seven painted coats, twelve painted hats, two painted chairs, two painted stands, multi-image projections, an eighty minute scripted performance, a seventy-five page research booklet; project is a study of the evolution of capitalist and socialist economic thought, performance is also available as an eighty-one minute video lecture.

1984-1987 -- Third World Ties: twenty-two connected sculptural sections of canvas stretched over wooden forms with wood and misc. painted additions; project symbolizes U.S. and U.S.S.R. interventions in twenty nations around the world; project also includes a research booklet and 102 minute video version, 4' X 40' X 20', mixed media.

1983 -- Five Futures: canvas stretched over wooden forms with wood and misc. painted additions; depicts five possible nuclear futures, 40" ht., 11' dia., mixed media.
