2002-3 Gitanjali

Gitanjali is a book of poems written by the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore in 1912. In 1913 Tagore was the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. When the I first read the book my head was filled with imagery of India. I created a 9” X 9” painting for each of the 103 poems in the book. The book is a revelation of the poet’s search for God and comes from Tagore’s very sophisticated Hindu perspective. It seemed to me a very universal search.
